abstract = {The current global food system is characterised by industrialised production, environmental degradation, and social inequality. In response and resistance to this panorama, agroecology has emerged as a concept for rethinking food systems along ecological, social and cultural dimensions. It is broadly understood as a scientific discipline, an agronomic practice, and a social movement, centred on the idea of the ecologisation of agriculture and the transformation of food production and provisioning systems into more sustainable and fairer. A persisting challenge for agroecology lies in its multiplicity of visions and aims, which are contested among different actors and audiences across scientific literature, policy dialogues, and social cultures and movements. Attention is increasingly turned to the role of markets, as empirical studies have highlighted their potential to contribute to food systems transformations through multiple and diverse market innovations. Drawing on the literature on sustainability and socio-technical transitions, this doctoral thesis focuses on directionality, which questions how market-driven agroecological transitions acquire orientation and momentum. Through this lens, it examines how markets can act as arenas of food systems transformation, by exploring how structures, agency, and ideologies interact to guide sustainability transitions in the agri-food sector. In this regard, I introduce the concept of market infrastructures to understand how actors co-construct markets that both enable and constrain transitions. Complementarily, I advance the idea of agroecological entrepreneurship by emphasising how actors’ creative, value-driven practices shape current markets or create new ones. Finally, I explore values and meanings as forces that determine how agroecology is interpreted and legitimised in market contexts. These three conceptual approaches are integrated within a multi-case study design covering the European Union (EU), the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), to analyse diverse market-driven agroecological initiatives through qualitative comparative and discourse-analytical methods. Within this framework, across four chapters, I examine how these initiatives reconfigure governance, innovation, and meaning in markets for agroecology, to support the argument that market-based agroecological transitions depend on the interplay between enabling infrastructures, entrepreneurial agency, and legitimising values that direct the course of food systems transformation, rather than being spontaneous and purely grassroots. },

abstract = {Resilience has become a major theme in research, innovation and public policy over the past decade, against a backdrop of multiple and interlinked crises. The SCAR Working Group on Food Systems (SCAR Food Systems) commissioned the Horizon Europe-funded RefreSCAR project to conduct a study to better understand the research and innovation (R&I) undertaken to date on the resilience of food systems and to formulate recommendations for Food 2040, the European Commission’s forthcoming strategic R&I agenda on food systems. This report presents the main results of this study, based on a synthesis of key resilience concepts, a systematic review of 163 R&I projects identified through database searches, an online survey and five case studies on key themes for food system resilience.
The review identified a marked increase in food system resilience R&I between 2015 and 2025, with the number of funded projects almost doubling after 2020.The analysis shows a significant imbalance in the approach of R&I projects. Most projects focus on strengthening the resilience of primary production to the effects of climate change through a technical approach to resilience aiming to maintain or restore key functions of food systems. Relatively few adopt a transformative approach in which food system resilience is enhanced through profound changes towards sustainability. Content analysis further shows that holistic food system perspectives and organisational innovations are only weakly represented, and explicit consideration of cascading and compound risks is extremely rare.
The findings suggest that the current European R&I portfolio is only partially aligned with the holistic food-system perspective promoted in recent EU food system strategies, highlighting opportunities for Food 2040 to strengthen systemic and transformative approaches to resilience.
They point to the need for greater investment in holistic food-system resilience, governance, supply chains, by promoting better coordination between technological and organisational innovation, as well as the need to develop R&I on cascading and compound risks.},

This study analyzes the debates stemming from the coexistence of these models, particularly during the initial term of neoliberal-centrist Emmanuel Macron’s presidency in France.
Employing collective monitoring from 2017 to 2021, a corpus of 958 online news and blog articles was compiled. Using a computational analysis, we reveal the framings and controversies emerging from this media discourse. The macro-structuring of discourse on model coexistence revolves around scientific, economic and political framings. Coexistence is a complex of debates based on specific frames associated with specific arenas and actor configurations: growth of organic agriculture, transformations of agrifood systems, sciences of production and impacts, livestock and meat diet controversies, agroecological innovations, CAP reform criticism, discourse of peasant agriculture and State-Profession co-gestion. Employing global sentiment analysis and focusing on salient controversies, namely EGAlim law, pesticide regulations, and agribashing, we show the shift from conciliation to a hardening of debates. Finally, we discuss the causes and consequences of this trend. The political will to support the transition of agriculture remains influenced by the co-gestion system, an inherited configuration of decision-makers instrumental in the agricultural modernization. As a consequence, significant agricultural challenges, particularly highlighted in the scientific macro-frame, persist unresolved. This lock-in of the agrifood system is based on defensive strategies that challenge the democratic debate about food and agricultural practices.},

abstract = {As part of the current agroecological transition, animal traction in agriculture is benefiting from an increased focus in developed countries. However, the practice is struggling to gain recognition from research, institutions and the agricultural profession. This article aims to analyze how animal traction is treated in developed countries, and to assess the extent to which it could be considered an agroecological practice. We analyze animal traction as a scientific object and a socio-professional movement. Our methodology is based on a review of scientific literature and an analysis of the French general press. The various studies show that animal traction has advantages in terms of energy, economics and agronomy. It tends to be developed by alternative movements and farmers motivated by a desire to redesign our food systems. Both scientific and press reviews show a renewed positive interest in animal traction. Although these reviews highlight its agroecological potential, the practice is facing difficulties in gaining recognition. The findings of this article are of obvious interest to rural development researchers and policy makers. They help the former to explore new issues in the return of animal traction, and the latter to better understand the development factors of this practice.},

abstract = {While organic agriculture has created a set of institutions that allow producers to know which practices provide “organic” quality and allow consumers to recognize it via an on-package label, the landscape of agroecological products is quite fluid and diverse. Often, products are traded directly between producers and consumers and quality is conveyed verbally. However, there has been a general increase in the use of private labels to claim that products are agroecological or “more than organic”. This article explores these recent innovations by asking: How does agroecology become a product quality claim in innovative forms of quality control? To answer this question, data on labels claiming to be “agroecological” and related assurance systems were gathered through internet research, market monitoring and semi-structured interviews in the European Union. In this article we explore the range of claims, and control networks, used to characterize the so-called “agroecological” labels and confront them with FAO’s 10 principles of agroecology. This 27-country comparison offers interesting insights into the overlaps and boundaries between agroecology and organic agriculture in terms of the markets that are created.},

abstract = {Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.},

abstract = {Value chains are an important driver for the current labor dynamics in the agri-food sector, and agri-food value chain sustainability strongly depends on decent work conditions. An increasing literature body have been investigated the interactions between chain agents and how it impacted labor issues. Our aim was to map the scientific landscape of the scientific knowledge on labor in agri-food value chains. We performed a bibliometric review of 343 articles indexed in the Web of Science based on descriptive and network analysis of articles metadata, which covered authors, journals, citation times, keywords and countries. We showed that labor in agri-food value chains has an international audience, despite that knowledge production was largely built by a restraint leading scientific network. Overall, the scientific knowledge is organized into four main research domains on labor in agri-food value chains: (1) labor governance in global value chains through standards, (2) employment in value chains and impacts on socioeconomic conditions of rural areas, (3) gender issues and value chains, (4) labor and upgrading in global value chains. The controversies in the international literature regarding labor issues in the agri-food value chains, and blind spots of current research are discussed.},

abstract = {Climate change is challenging the sustainability of agricultural systems. Some authors argue that only an agroecological transformation of agricultural systems is the appropriate response to climate change issues. CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), aims to catalyze positive change towards climate-smart agriculture (CSA), food systems and landscapes to meet the triple goals of food security, adaptation and mitigation. In this paper, we present agroecological principles as defined by various authors or institutions and question how they address climate change issues. Using FAO 10 elements of Agroecology as framework we investigate to what extent CCAFS is aligned with agroecological principles. To answer these questions, we used a combination of bibliographic study, interviews of CCAFS Flagship leaders and text mining method. Our main conclusion is that although agroecology was not a key concept in the design of CCAFS activities, on the ground many promoted practices where agroecological practices and several of the 10 FAO elements of agroecology were addressed but with a different perspective than the one promoted by the proponents of agroecology. To further improve or re-direct CCAFS activities with agroecological principles we recommended five main areas of intervention: to better include agroecological principles in the implementation of NDCs, to strengthen system thinking for food system transformation, to strengthen landscape-level activities, to develop projects on circular and solidarity economy, and to use CIS to support the implementation of agroecological practices.},

abstract = {This study was commissioned by Fairtrade Germany and Fairtrade International. It was carried out by a team of researchers working with the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée (UPEM) in the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations et Sociétés (LISIS). LISIS is an interdisciplinary research laboratory devoted to the study of science and innovations in society and is specifically renowned for its expertise on agri-food systems. It brings together 35 researchers and professors and 30 PhD and postdoctoral fellows from three core research disciplines: science and technology studies (STS), organization studies and digital studies.

abstract = {Agroecology is considered with different focus and weight in different parts of the world as a social and political movement, as science, and as practice. Despite its multitude of definitions, agroecology has begun in Europe to develop in different regional, national and continental networks of researchers, practitioners, advocates and movements. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive overview about these different developments and networks. Therefore, this paper attempts to document and provide a mapping of the development of European agroecology in its diverse forms. Through a literature review, interviews, active conference participation, and an extensive internet search we have collected information about the current state and development of agroecology in Europe. Agroecological research and higher education exist more in western and northern Europe, but farm schools and farmer-to-farmer training are also present in other regions. Today a large variety of topics are studied at research institutions. There is an increasing number of bottom-up agroecological initiatives and national or continental networks and movements. Important movements are around food sovereignty, access to land and seeds. Except for France, there are very few concrete policies for agroecology in Europe. Agroecology is increasingly linked to different fields of agri-food systems. This includes Community Supported Agriculture systems, but also agroecological territories, and some examples of labelling products. To amplify agroecology in Europe in the coming years, policy development will be crucial and proponents of agroecology must join forces and work hand-in-hand with the many stakeholders engaged in initiatives to develop more sustainable agriculture and food systems.
